An open letter in Chennai Metblogs about cell phone ban and dress code

I just read a post in Metroblogging Chennai, an open letter to the administrative authorities. The post was written by the author Dilip. He has referred to a news article in The Hindu from 2005. Though this is pretty late the blog post was well thought out and pretty much sums up the arguments against the cell phone ban and dress code implementation in Anna University very well. After that many colleges across India introduced some bans which were more or less on the similar lines.

I was also a student of Anna University. Instead of making the college a pleasant environment, as it used to be, their acts are just making the students want to get out of the college as soon as possible after getting a good job (okay the degree also ;) ). Only because of this attitude the students are able to put up with all the crap that is being thrown at them.

The original post can be read here.

Anyway most of the so-called-students because of whom these bans were introduced are all just happily using the mobiles without giving a damn. While it is the unassuming students with genuine reasons for mobile phone usage are mostly getting caught. One of my juniors told me that one day when he was leaving to his house from college, he saw some university officials standing at the college gate and checking the students to see whether they were having mobile phones. He described that the situation was similar to the one we see when there are a few traffic police standing beside the road to catch the erring motorists. Needless to say a few students who were using the mobiles were questioned and their mobiles seized. I later found out that the students have to bring their parents and collect the seized mobiles the next day.

I guess the main two points that the author made in the original post can be understood by reading the following two lines from his post:

The attitude of AVOIDING problems to eliminate them instead of addressing them the resolve them should stop. Telling someone to wear something is outright pure sexism and perversion.

I cant really understand how the highly educated, distinguished people who are holding doctrates and such high positions of authority can succumb to such decision making style which is typical of a politician.

Anyway at the end of the day students dont care much and just move on with their sem exam/placement preps and countdown to CAT / GRE / GATE / TOFL / WTF / LOL / ROFL / STFU. And these grievances just turn into another blog post and stop with just that. :)
